About TYC

TYC provides talented high school students of culturally diverse backgrounds with a nurturing environment which encourages positive self-expression through their active participation in the exploration of Shakespeare and related drama. TYC is open to students entering 9th grade through graduating seniors interested in learning more about theatre, Shakespeare, and self-expression through the arts.  Students from diverse communities selected by audition meet for 4 weeks during summer to rehearse and perform a Shakespeare play under the direction of professional Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival artists.

Henry the Sixth, 2003

TYC History

In 1991, The Young Company was conceived by Dr. Stuart Omans and Judith Rubinger as the primary educational branch of the Festival.  In 1997, Richard Width took over the direction of the program and re-structured it into its present format.  Now, The Young Company is but one part of the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival's answer to our community's growing need for alternative educational programs providing support and challenge in the academic arena. Servicing local high school youth of economically diverse communities who are predisposed toward the performing arts, The Young Company's staff of professional artists use theater to facilitate the emotional, social, and academic growth of young people.
